1. Architecture
Some programs require a portfolio as well as your academic grades etc. in order to allow you to attend University to study architecture. It is essential that your teacher or company knows what you are capable of, if you are experienced and if you are skilled enough to excel in the field.
It is really important to have a portfolio in architecture that stands out from the competition, so that you get picked over your rivals when interviewing or applying for becoming an architect.

An acting portfolio, unlike the other 4 that I have mentioned, is centred around you and your appeal is very important when trying to get an agent or even a part in a TV series, movie or any other production.
This means that things like good head-shots, monologues etc. are important for getting into an acting contract for any production.

4. Fashion merchandising
Fashion is an incredible competitive field which is constantly changing, due to the rapid, consecutive changes in fashion trends, choices and popularity in different brands. Merchandising can be an incredibly rewarding career, if you do it correctly, which is why it is important that your portfolio is perfect and stands out.
You must have great skill in being imaginative and innovative, which allows you to come up with things like new brands, concepts etc.
