Survey organisations

Survey organisations

There is a wide variety of survey organisations across the media industry and creative industry.

They are essential to having products and companies rated; here I have focused more on age-rating companies in order to show how they differ between industry and territory.

These companies rate audio-visual and gaming products by age rating;
Examples of survey organisations are;
Pan European Game Information (PEGI)

PEGI are mainly based in the European Union (EU) and United Nations (UN)- they specialize in rating digital video games as well as analising the content that is used throughout the content such as violence levels, use of language, adult themes etc. It allows the consumer to have a brief idea of the content as well as who it is and is not suitable for. They are the leading age rating association of most of Europe and Israel - with market share of 35 territories overall.

British Board of Film Classification (bbfc)

The bbfc is the leading film classification board in the United Kingdom; it rates movies by age, similar to the MPA, and allows the consumer to get a brief idea of the contents of the film - the ratings, like with PEGI, are included on the cover of the physical optical disc as well as the packaging of the product: in addition, with online copies, the bbfc also rates online purchased/rented copies of the movie as long as your location is within the UK territory.

Motion Picture Association (MPA)

The Motion Picture Association of America is the worlds leading movie rating program and is also the oldest movie-rating association by age. Before companies such as the bbfc existed, the MPA also rated UK content. The ratings are much more simplified that the others; G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17 are the most up to date ratings.

Examples of data collation companies within the radio and television (Great Britain only) are;
